Three quarters of an inch from the edge, the underside of this plate falls into a recess that locates it on the plate below. The result is a stack of six that stands four inches high and pulls apart without sticking. At 9.75 inches it is a full dinner plate — wide enough for a roast, a fish or a table set for guests — and the foot ring is proportioned so the plate sits flat rather than spinning. Recycled melamine brings the weight to just over ten ounces, which is light for a plate this size and steady in the hand.

The plate was drawn around the rim. A wide border is comfortable to hold and gives the stack somewhere to locate; too wide and the plate eats the table, too narrow and the serving area competes with the edge. At 9.75 inches the border is a little under an inch, which leaves a flat center large enough for a full meal and a rim that carries the eye around it. The rim is wide enough to hold with a thumb and steady enough to carry a full plate back to the table without a second hand.
The underside is engineered rather than decorated: a recessed ring, a foot that sits flat, and a wall that thickens slightly where the plate meets the hand. Because the material is molded in one piece, there is no glaze to craze and no joint to hold water. The surface takes heat from food without passing it through to a lap; it does not take a microwave, an oven shelf or a cooktop.
This is the plate we expect a buyer to reorder. It goes into restaurants, holiday apartments and family cupboards, and it stacks with the bowls and mugs of the same collection, so a table can be built one color at a time. Restaurants order it by the dozen; households usually start with four.
