Facet Ice Bucket

An insulated vessel for ice, and for after the ice.

An ice bucket is a short-lived object at the table and a useful one everywhere else. This version is molded in recycled plastic with flat facets around the wall and a removable liner inside; the liner insulates the ice and lifts out so meltwater can be poured away without fishing for the last cube. At 8.3 inches across and 8.7 inches tall it holds two bottles and a scoop of ice, or a head of flowers, or whatever accumulates on a bar cart. When the evening ends, it becomes a container. Empty, it weighs less than a bottle of wine, so it moves from bar to table without ceremony.

The faceted wall is not only a pattern. Flat panels around a tapered form make the bucket easy to grip when it is cold and wet, and they hold their shape under the weight of ice and bottles. The liner sits inside with a small clearance, which leaves an insulating layer of air between the plastic wall and the melt. A lip at the top lets the liner lift out cleanly.

Recycled plastic suits an object that will get wet, knocked and left outside. The material does not rust, does not chip like ceramic, and does not mind being set down on stone. Color runs through the molded wall, so a scuff on a faceted edge is less visible than it would be on a painted surface, and the matte finish keeps the bucket from looking like a bar accessory polished for a photograph. The base is broad for its height, which keeps the bucket stable when the liner is heavy with ice.

Used for wine, it is a serving object; used for flowers or utensils, it is a vessel; used empty with the liner removed, it is a container for whatever the room needs. Three uses is not a concept. It is what happens to a good bucket after the first summer.

Care
