Stack Mug, Set of 4

Four mugs that become one column.

A mug has to do two things: hold heat without passing it to the hand, and leave the cupboard tidier than it found it. This set of four does both. Each mug is molded from recycled melamine in a single piece, with a thin rim, a handle that clears a knuckle and a 3.2-inch stack height, so four nest into a column just under eleven inches tall. An internal ledge below the rim catches the last of the wash water. The exterior is satin, the interior lighter for reading the fill, and the set arrives as one mug in each of the four house colors: chalk, clay, mist and olive.

The form was drawn from the shelf, not the table. Four mugs have to live in a cupboard that may be twelve inches tall, so the stack geometry is set at 3.2 inches per mug and the handle is recessed far enough that the column stands without a wobble. The rim is thinner than the wall beneath it, which makes the mouth feel closer to porcelain than expected. Inside, a shallow dam under the rim holds back the last sip of wash water so it cannot run down the outside of a stacked mug.

Recycled melamine is the right material for this object because it is light, tough and resistant to the heat of a poured drink without conducting it. It is molded in one piece, so there is no seam at the base to trap water and no handle fixed at an angle. Color runs through the wall rather than sitting on the surface: a chip reveals the same tone underneath, and years of dishwashing wear the finish evenly rather than in patches.

At the table it is a mug for a morning that repeats — coffee, tea, a second cup taken standing at the counter. The four colors make it easy to know whose cup is whose, and quiet enough that the shelf still reads as one set.

Care
