Four petals around a quiet center.

The top of this table is a clover of four rounded petals, and every angle gives a different silhouette. It is molded in recycled plastic as one hollow piece, with a consistent wall thickness and corners that are curved rather than sharp, so it survives being moved, sat on and left outside. At 44 inches wide, 28 deep and 15 high it sits low in a lounge setting; the petals that extend beyond the center also work as perch seats when the room is full. The table weighs 53 pounds empty and can be filled with dry sand for wind resistance.

The form is a single closed molding, which is difficult at this size and worth the trouble. A hollow one-piece table has no joints to loosen, no fixings to rust and no underside that fills with water. The wall thickness is held constant through the curves, so the plastic cools evenly and the outer corners carry load without a stress point. The plug underneath is the only moving part: remove it, pour in dry play sand, replace it, and the table gains weight where the wind can reach it.

Four petals are a practical geometry as well as a sculptural one. A rectangle seats two; this shape lets a third and fourth person sit at the corners, and the curved edges mean nobody gets a table corner in the thigh. The matte surface takes a glass without a coaster and a wet glass without a ring, which is more than most lounge tables can say. The hollow form also means the table can be lifted by two people at the rim, which is how it gets from a van to a terrace.

Indoors it reads as a piece of sculpture that happens to hold a tray. Outdoors it reads as the table that stays out in September because moving it is a two-person job. It is also the table that sells the rest of the range in a showroom.
