A dining chair has to disappear under a table and still look considered when it is pulled out. This one is a one-piece molded shell in recycled plastic on a slender powder-coated steel frame, with a slight flex in the back and a seat height of 18.1 inches that suits standard tables. The shell has a narrow waist and a broad shoulder, which reads as generous from across the room and keeps the chair light to lift. Supplied as a set of two, it stacks when the table is cleared and is suitable for indoor and outdoor use. Each chair is assembled before packing, so the set can go straight to the floor.

Arco Dining Chair, Set of 2 · Seating

The chair is an exercise in removing parts. The back and seat are a single molding; the frame is four steel tubes and a cross-brace. There is no upholstery to clean, no glue and no hidden fixing to work loose. The shell flexes a little under the sitter because the material is thin at the waist and thicker at the shoulders — not enough to feel unstable, just enough to take the edge off a long dinner.

The geometry is conventional on purpose. At 18.5 inches wide it fits a 24-inch place setting and can be stacked out of the way when the table is cleared. The shell's lip overhangs the frame slightly, which protects knees and keeps the steel from reading as the main event. Powder coating is applied after the frame is bent, so the finish covers the welds and the tube ends are sealed against moisture. The chair weighs a little over eleven pounds, light enough to move with one hand and heavy enough to stay where it is put.

Sets of two are the trade unit, because dining chairs arrive as pairs and a table rarely needs an odd number. It is designed to be ordered in one color and reordered in another, which is how a dining room drifts toward a palette without a shopping list.
