Plank Bench
A bench with the proportions of a wall.
A bench is a small piece of architecture, and this one is drawn with the proportions of a long low wall. It is molded in recycled plastic as one hollow piece, 72 inches long, 16 deep and 17 high, with a seat that curves very slightly across its width and edges that round to the hand. It seats three without a cushion, stands up to weather and weighs 46 pounds empty — heavy enough to stay put on a terrace, light enough for two people to move. Like the coffee table, it takes dry sand in the base for wind resistance.

Why it is made this way.
Plank Bench · Seating
The bench is a plank only in profile. Its section is a shallow channel: the seat dips a little toward the center, the edges turn down to give the eye a line and the hand a grip, and the underside is open enough to drain. The one-piece molding gives it the stiffness of a much thicker slab without the weight, and the curved corners mean an outdoor bench that does not become a hazard at a party. The body is hollow, but the seat does not sound hollow when it is knocked; the molding is thicker at the ends where the bench is lifted.
Length is the working dimension. At six feet it can serve one side of a dining table, sit in a hallway without blocking a door, or line a pool without becoming a diving platform. It is heavy enough to leave out, and the sand fill turns that weight into something that does not move when the wind gets under it. Three lengths exist in the tool; the 72-inch version is the one that fits most rooms and most containers.
It is the least decorative object in the collection and the one people ask about most, because a bench that stays outside all year is a quiet kind of proof. It is the piece that arrives in the most photographs of finished projects.
