Cell Modular Shelving

Storage as a system of small rooms.

Hexagonal cells make a shelf that can be stacked, spread or added to later. Each cell is a powder-coated steel frame with a tempered glass shelf, 28 inches wide, 12 deep and 28 high, and the frames bolt to one another so the system grows without a new cabinet. The shape is efficient: a hexagon needs less material than a box for the same opening, and the open front keeps books, records and objects visible from the room. A three-cell starter sits flat against a wall; nine cells make a room divider. It is intended for interior walls, where the open frame keeps a room feeling light.

The object

Why it is made this way.

Cell Modular Shelving · Storage

The cell geometry came from a material question. A hexagon braced on six sides resists racking better than an open box, so the frame can be made from thin steel and still carry a shelf of books. The frames are joined with bolts and brackets, which means the system is flat-packed, shipped by the carton and assembled against the wall rather than out from it. Three cells per carton is the packed unit for export; an anchor kit is included because a tall stack must be fixed to the wall.

The shelves are tempered glass, cut to follow the hexagon and set on rubber pads so they can be lifted out for cleaning. Glass shows dust, which is a fair trade for the light it lets through; the open frame does the same for the room. The powder coating is matte and slightly textured, applied over a phosphate undercoat so the finish holds at the joints where a flat-packed object takes its wear.

Use it for books, for a record player, for the objects that accumulate on a hallway wall. The point of a modular system is that it can be wrong for a while and then be changed — add a cell, lower a row, take it apart when you move.

Materials & care

Materials, care and use.

Materials

  • Powder-coated steel frame over a phosphate undercoat.
  • Tempered glass shelves on rubber pads.
  • Bolted connectors and wall anchor kit included.

Care

  • Dust with a soft cloth; use glass cleaner on the shelves only.
  • Keep the frame anchored to the wall and check fixings after moving it.
  • Distribute weight evenly across a cell; the open frame is stiff, not a load-bearing wall.
